DataFest 2024

The fifth annual ASA DataFest at the University of Notre Dame hosted 11 teams with 40 student participants.  This took place March 22 through March 24, 2023.

For this competition, students were analyzing data provided by CourseKata, a platform that creates and publishes series of e-books for introductory statistics and data science classes.  These courses are created using demonstrated learning strategies that help students learn statistics and data science.  The data provided a snapshot of the actions, responses and choices of thousands of students as hey engaged in learning the concepts and skills of statistics and coding in R, while taking a real statistic class.  This provided a much different perspective that what is traditionally done for statistics educators, as they typically have to rely on 1 hour interviews, or post course test scores to determine success of teaching techniques.

One really cool aspect of this data was that most (if not all) of the students had taken an introductory statistics course prior to the event.  This meant that unlike other years, they were all able to provide some sort of content expertise to their analysis that is so important to the data science process.
