Frequently Asked Questions

How do I sign up?

Click here to sign up. Please fill out the form fully. You can sign up as a group (2 to 5 students) or leave us your information to be matched with others looking for teams. There will be an early registration deadline in order to get a t-shirt.  Date tbd.

Is there a registration fee?

Thanks to the monetary contributions of our generous donors, there is no registration fee for DataFest this year.  To keep DataFest free to students in the future, we are continuously looking for donors for the competition.

Who is eligible to compete?

Any undergraduate is eligible to compete!  This year we hope to have participants from several neighboring schools in addition to Notre Dame students.

Can graduate students compete?

While some other DataFest locations allow masters students to participate, DataFest at Notre Dame will be exclusively for undergraduates.  However, if you would like to participate in the event, we would love to have you as a mentor or judge.  Please fill out the volunteer form on the Sign Up page to receive more information about this!

How large are the teams?

Teams can be made up of 2 to 5 students.  Preference will be given to teams of 4 or 5 students, and if registration fills up, smaller teams (2 to 3 students) may be combined to form larger teams at the discretion of the organizers.

Do I have to compete in a team?

Yes, but if you don't have a team in mind, you should still register.  Please put "NONE" as your team name and rate your level of interest in DataFest.  We will match you with others in the same boat.

What do I need to compete?

All you really need is enthusiasm for statistics and/or computer science.  Some of the best presentations come from groups of students who don't know a lot about data science, but did a good job of focusing on one aspect of the data.

What are the rules of the competition?

The rules are very simple:

  • No more than five students per team.

  • No fewer than 2 students per team.

  • It's a competition, but a friendly one, so collaboration between teams is not only allowed but highly encouraged. Official ASA DataFest consultants (grad students, faculty, data professionals, etc.) will also be around throughout the weekend to help with any questions you might have. However you can't have outside help.

  • The data and data donor MUST stay a secret until the designated reveal time (some time in May).  This keeps a level playing field for students around the country.

  • The data must be removed from your device at the end of the competition.

What can I win?

There are monetary prizes for the top teams in three different categories: best insight, best visualization and best use of external data.  Exact prize amounts depend on the number of members in your team and how much our sponsors donate to the event.  ASA student memberships, books, fame, glory, or some combination thereof are also up for grabs.
